Duke?
Is that you???
Review by Dave "!FT!Marauder" Kratky. Apr 20.2001
Well, finally they've
released Duke Nukem for.... Oh.. no.. wait...... You know, it's really nice to see the little guy succeed... and it looks like Croteam is well on their way to success with Serious Sam. Serious Sam reminds me quite a bit of the original Doom & Doom2. Big guns, bigger monsters and an absolutely frantic pace. You spend quite a bit of your time (Especially in the later levels when you have huge numbers of monsters coming at you at one time) backing away, desperately trying to reload and shoot... kill.. KILL.. KIIIIILLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. WHY WON'T YOU BASTARDS DIE AND STOP COMING?!?!??!? *ahem* Anyhows.
Storyline & Plot Heh. Not much really. Pretty typical shooter. Aliens are here to mess up the earth. They succeed. You go back in time to kick some alien ass. It is pretty amusing to hear Duke.. er... Sam humming tunes as he fights.. and some of his comments.... Well, they're not on level with Duke most of the time.. But the final scene where he phones up the bad guy. :) Whahaha.
Graphics Engine & Sound Wow. The Serious Sam engine is indeed serious. Featuring more eye candy than you can shake the proverbial stick at, it's damned sweet. The levels are detailed beyond the call of duty and well... Other than the fact that you're running around with a 6' long minigun and the monsters trying to tear your head off, it might make a pretty convincing tour of ancient egypt. One VERY interesting thing about this engine is that fact that when you aproach a texture VERY closely..... It doesn't just blur out...... It seems to bump map... Ohhhhh.. Makes the game look SOO much better. Just one of those little touches that seem to be everywhere in this game. Attention to detail certainly hasn't been spared....
Models & Monsters
Ok, we're talking some serious badass mofo's here. I don't know who it was who's job it was to dream these things up, but I bet he doesn't get much sleep on work nights with visions of these beasties running thru his head. Very nice work. The engine also doesn't seem to have any issues putting up tons of monsters on your screen with little slow down... In some scenes I probably had 30-40 monsters coming at me.... and didn't lag out. :) Serious Sam also wins the award for the largest monsters ever seen in a game... the final boss is 330 metres tall. You don't even come up his ankles. Gah.
Weapons
SS has a gun for everyone. All the way from your standard knife (Which IS actually usefull sometimes.) to two shotguns (Normal and super) to miniguns and rocket launchers. Lots of ammo around for your new toys, and the guns are nicely spread out.. So there's always new toys to get your hands on. :) Check the above screenshots for weapon pics. A picture is after all worth a thousand words as they say.
Stuff that sucked Not really a whole hell of a lot. This game is one hell of a rush, old school style. It's just plain fun. Very little replay value tho. Once you play it through once or twice that's about it. It took me 6 hours and 48 minutes to beat the game, playing straight thru. Pretty short.. But oddly I really felt it was worth the money. It's just such a rush!
Final analysis Worth the buy. :) Not much replay value, but it's a frantic kill fest that feels alot longer than the 7 hours to beat it.. and hey, it's an inexpensive thrill. I really didn't like the multiplayer... But.... there's mods coming out.. so we'll see what happens. Personally I'm pretty excited about what they're going to do with the engine.... Wow. The possibilities!
