is my boomstick!
Allrighty,
here's one of my favorite parts of any game. The arsenal.
Naturally a game needs good guns, or it's just not going to
be a very good game. Look at Barbie Fashion Designer. No guns=Bad
game. Solitaire? Same deal. Monopoly? Gah. This is an important
life lesson, learn it well grasshopper.
The guys
on the Dev Team came up with some sweet sweet guns this time
around. When you start the game, you (being a miner) start
out weaponless. Not to fear, there's lots of Ultor personal
roaming around you can cap and disarm. Weapons in the game
range from a stun baton (melee) and pistol to old favorites
like the combat shotgun, sniper rifles, rocket launcher and
submachine gun. Oh, and then there's the new guns. Ohhhhh
the new guns. Fusion rocket launchers that blow the bejesus
out of EVERYTHING in a room.
And the coolest weapon I have ever seen in a game in my entire
life. The Rail Driver. This bad boy is a one shot, one kill
weapon similar to the Quake railgun. It also offers an infared
scope. So you can see, and shoot, through walls. This, in
multiplayer, is the weapon I camp.. Er, I mean use the most.
Yes. That's it.
All weapons
also have an alternate fire mode. Zoom for the sniper rifles,
assault rifle fires in three round burst or full auto, missile
launchers go into heat seeking mode (Only in single player
regrettably.) etc. Very cool, very UTish. :)
Vehicles
As a
perk to being a renegade miner of a killing spree against
your legal employer, you get to high jack some rather entertaining
vehicles. A jeep (With rear mounted machine gun of course.)
APC (tiny tank), fighter plane, submachine, and apparently
a drilling vehicle, although I never used this last one in
the game myself. Most vehicles pack some decent firepower,
especially the Fighter with it's rotary cannon and heat seeking
missiles, and the APC with chaingun and mortar launchers.
The vehicles are a great deal of fun, and make you almost
unstoppable. In some cases literally, as it's one a hellof
alotta fun barreling down the tunnels in a jeep, running down
mutants and guards as you go. *squuuiish* <maniacal laughter>
Multiplayer
Decent
in game browser, and a wide variety of games to be played
here. Standard boring Quake style deathmatch, team deathmatch,
CTF and support for multiplayer mods as well. Personally I
prefer CTF over the deathmatch games. Design on the included
maps is generally excellent, with lots of places to go, lots
of cover, tons of weapon drops and nice balance.
Controls
Standard
WASD shooter controls, easily remapped to meet your unique
needs. No surprises here.
Manual
Nice manual, all the details on gameplay, controls and
weapons you'll need. The in game tutorial actually teaches
you everything you need to know anyhow. I never actually read
the manual until I was working on this part of the review.
There's also some nice background on the main characters on
your side. Eh, it's a shooter manual, put it back in the box
and get on with the damned game. :) |
