An Interview with Monkeyboy of the PVK Dev Team - April 22.2001 - Dave "Marauder" Kratky

Allrighty. When I first heard about this half life mod, I thought someone was just pulling my leg... But they weren't. It's real. It exists. It's such a bizzare idea... and it's a hoot!

Beta 2 is almost ready to ship! I had to try it, and I had to get my greasy little hands on Monkeyboy, the dev team lead and put the questions to him. (The interview incidentally was actually done about 2 months ago. Their web site is now back up, and I have Beta 2 to play with.....

The Forge, Total Reload, Planet Halflife, Halflife.net

It's a steel cage match: Captain Hook & Smee vs. Long John Silver & his parrot.... Who wins, and why?
Long John Silver would whoop on the other two. Hook would be too busy running away from the crocodile and Smee would be kissing ass too much to help out. And LJS’s parrot is one bad mofo.

3Dfx or nVidia?
3Dfx all the way

OK, let's get on with the relevant stuff now......

Tell us a little about the PVK mod. What is it exactly?
Basically, you have Pirates, Vikings and Knights trying to beat the crap out of each other and steal each other’s treasure. It’s a huge anachronism, and that’s part of the fun. The gameplay modes involve either killing (well, they all involve killing), stealing treasure, breaking stuff, controlling a territory…um, yeah, and some variations on killing…Each of three teams has three classes, and they all seem to work in a rock paper scissors way. Depending on what your enemy is, your class may or may not be very effective. What is PVK? It’s fun…

How many people are on the dev team, and what are their jobs?
There are three people that started the mod: myself, who does coding; Duncan, who does the models and now code as well; and Neck (Dinah, Wabbit, Garrett) who does the maps and the 2D art. In addition we’ve got mappers Pvt Snafu & Gaz, Bearman doing some really cool sounds, type11error doing a linux port (eventually/maybe) and now GoodGuy who will do HUD and client.dll coding.

How did you get started with this whole project, what inspired it? (Any special influances?)
We wanted to make a counter-strike map, then we realized that the cs objectives needed to be modified, then we realized we wanted to make our own mod, then we realized that it would be cool to have pirates, Vikings and knights cause they were all badasses and hadn’t been done before

OK. I have to admit the whole idea seems a little... zany.... Was the smoking of anything other than tabbaco involved with the decision to start the project? You can tell us!
Not really, but I do think we’ve been intentionally weird to make sure this mod is as fun to play as it is for us to make. Check out some of the idle animations and death animations that are, as you would say, just zany. I likes it a lot though.

What's your favorite team to play?
I like pirates cause I’ve always had a dream of being a pirate. Something about ransacking towns and raping the wenches seems appealing to me. Course, the Vikings did that too…

Favorite map?
So hard to tell now! I like colossus a lot, because it’s super innovative. We have some test maps that are giant boxes, and those are fun as hell to kill people on. Harbor used to be really cool to play on as well.

Favorite weapon?
Nothing beats a skirmisher’s cutlass. With speed and grace and a new fun feature to be out in the next version, I’m happy when I’m wielding cold, barnacle encrusted steel.

Favorite game? (Du'oh. Me and my stupid unclear questions. - M)
Favorite game how? Favorite PVK mode would be booty tag cause no one plays is properly and I get tons of points. Favorite game on computers? Rouge Spear is nice and tactical and I have a lot of fun playing that. Counter-strike seems to take up a large portion of my day as well…

If you had to pick the coolest thing about the PVK, the thing that you feel will draw people to it, what would it be?
Come on, super happy fun attack parrots! What more do you want?

What do you have in the works for PVK? Where do you hope to go with it?
We’ve got all sorts of cool new tricks under our sleeves. Our next version should fix what everyone was complaining about in the last one, and should be pretty clean bug-wise, as well as cooler because of some new features. We’re going to keep churning them out as long as people seem to be interested, which I guess they still are.

Have you guys done any work on other games or pojects?
Duncan does work on an adventure game project. You can check his stuff out at http://www.squiresoft.web-hit.com/

How long has the mod been in development, and what would you say was the greatest challenge in making it?
Oh, jeez, I think for about a year now. I guess we’ll declare a birthday soon. The hardest part is working around the pain in the ass problems in the SDK, and trying to make the game do things that it didn’t do before and that no one else has really done before so we can’t copy them.

Are you happy with the response you guys are getting thus far?
It’d be nicer to have more servers up and running, but there does seem to be a bunch of people who like the game and are doing everything they can to make it bigger.

Anything else you'd like to add?
I’d like to add 24362577527 + 6436423646324643, but I lost my calculator and can’t do math in my head anymore. Stupid computers are making me dumb!

Thanks for the time Matt!

You can check out the main PVK website here... and even download a copy and see what the excitement is all about. I'm going to be installing the 2.0 beta to check it out in the next few hours. :) Review to come when it's officially released.
