Could the sheer coolness of Star Control return to life? Ohhh yeah.
An interview with the dev team, Darklight & RaNDoMLight! - 01/08/01 - Marauder

Many moons ago (1992 to be exact) a very, very sweet game was born. Star Control 2.

The original Star Control was decent, and alot of fun... But the second one was just about perfect. Strategy, adventure, action and combat. The graphics and music were just phenomenal. It was just a truly excellent game, especially for it's time. The third game in the series totally sucked. Horrendous waste of time and money.

Anyhow, the reason I'm mentioning this (And indeed the complete reason for this little article) is that a coupla guys from South Africa of all places are working on bringing back the magic. Woot!

If they can pull it off, it's going to be one game I'm so going to pick up. :) As an interesting note, these guys are VERY interesting in user feedback, and spend quite a bit of time on their forums talking to gamers who are interested in having their ideas heard.

Outworld is still in early development, but it's starting to look very good. It's going to be a very different game from anything we've seen lately, with an emphasis on space exploration, adventure, resource collecting, ship customization and some combat as well.

Wow. This guy's dentist must be a millionaire. Or armless... One of the two.

Listen to the words of the dev team in this interview, as they spread their wisdom.

GOOD MORNING DAVE...[sorry couldn't resist] (Sigh. Everyone's a bad comic - Marauder. :)

Can you please give us a short description of the Outworld project?
Many years ago there was a game called 'star-control 2' which set a precedent for adventure games and the like back then. It has always been our favorite game so we set out to mimic the gameplay to a degree, keeping the basic elements of SC2 while adding our own, and so Outworld was born. Christopher does all the 3d/2d graphics using 3dsmaxr3 while I do all the programming that brings it all together.
Exactly what is it and what are you trying to accomplish? (What sort of game will it be? How will it play? What will be major emphasis in the game be on?)

The game can be divided into several sections, namely; planetary/system exploration, Alien relationships [through conversation//actions], combat and finally trade/upgrading your ship.

The emphasis will be on the adventure aspect of the game, the story that pulls everything together. This is a mammoth project and there is only two of us, but as you can see from the alpha we have released we are making progress. [The alpha covers one of the more complete areas of the engine.] Yes, we know the name 'Outworld' is owned by Microsoft, it's a working name, GEESH! ;)

Number of people on team total?
2 [Chris and I] and a few consultants who help us on varies areas of gameplay etc. We use our forum at our site for ideas/comments and crit.
Have you guys worked on any other gaming projects in the past?
Yes, a retro worms clone called Blasted Hull, its going to be out soon, published by crystal-interactive. We have made several games but nothing on the scale of OUTWORLD.
How long have you been working on it?
Since March 2000 so that's almost a year, but the game has been in concept for many years.
Any major influences on this game? (Ex. Other games, designers?)
Star Control 2, Elite, Starfight, Starflight...The interface graphics in the game are heavily influenced by Fallout and Fallout II. The alien graphics and feel is heavily influenced by Neil Blevins (www.soulburn3d.com) who is an absolutely amazing 3d artist, and from movies like MIB, Lost in Space, StarShip Troopers and of course StarWars.
Have you had any interest from publishers?
Yes, *cough* Non disclosure agreement *cough*
Anything else you'd like to add?
....Yeah, look twice before crossing the road, and if you ever put a rabbit in a blender, make sure it goes in feet first so that you can see the expression on its face.
For full details on the game, and all it includes check out the official site. Looks like they're off to a good start, and asking for ideas from the community is one hell of a good idea. It'll be hard with only two guys on the team... But hey, we used to make games like that in the past... Why not now? Maybe we'll see a return of quality and actually caring about your product? Anyhows. I can hardly wait to get my hot little hands on this one and give it a spin. Go download the alpha from their site and see what you think!
Feast your eyes on the below never before seen screenshots. (Random! We love you buddy!)
